Since approximately 4500 BC there have been settlements on the edges of the marshes where the Tigris and the Euphrates reach the Persian Gulf. Mesopotamia, (meaning the land between two rivers) is the region between these two rivers,and has been since a little earlier than 3100 BC.

- Adad or Ishkur - god of storms, venerated as a supreme power especially in Syria and Lebanon.
- Inanna or Ishtar - goddess of fertility, love and war.
- Nabu - god of wisdom and writing.
- Shamash or Utu - god of the sun, arbiter of justice and patron of travellers.
The Mesopotamian had Gods for everything ; phenomena like the sun and moon.And objects and tools like hammers and chisels.Each town had a patron like the greek town Athens whose patron was Athena.
